You can't tone on an elliptical because toning is not a thing. It's fat loss and muscle gain. THAT'S IT. You're not going to gain muscle on an elliptical.
Ok then what's the point? How is an elliptical the most effective?
Where did you hear/read that elliptical is the most effective?
I didn't say it is the most effective piece of equipment. I asked how to make using one most effective for the user.
Honestly? It's most effective for doing an easy warmup before a harder workout or a lifting session. I rarely see anyone using it for a workout that will actually have any effect on weight loss. Just my opinion.
I'm in this camp. Elliptical is basically what I do to warm up my whole body before I lift, sometimes as steady state cardio when I'm done with my workout and waiting on my husband to finish. But if it works for you, then use it. I don't know anyone that's seen results using an elliptical. Better to walk on a treadmill at an incline.
Why is this better?
Personally I have a harder time getting my heart rate up on the elliptical. A slow jog on an incline and my heart rate goes up quickly - then I can switch to walking at a pace to maintain my target heart rate.
