Why bother to go to Blair Magnet if a kid ends up in those Colleges? You don't need to be an Ace to go to UMCP etc. This is a waste of resources. If you plan to go to MIT that is another story.
Lots of Blair magnet kids get great merit packages in UMD's honors program. We know several of these kids; some but not all of these families would struggle to send their kids to college without these merit aid packages. Others chose UMD because it has great STEM courses in their areas of interest. Most are probably going to grad school anyway. My Blair kid is at a USNWR top 5 because we can afford it with my parents' help. DCs said they felt "rich" compared to some other families at Blair, but believe me, my kids felt "poor" previously at their private elementary school. OP is making the same mistake lots of private school parents make on DCUM's private school forum. That's to assume that college matriculation is driven by acceptance rates rather than by family finances.
This! And wasn't there just another article thread on how something like 40% of students turn down their first choices b/c of money. Frankly, I breathed a sigh of relied when DD's top choice private rejected her. I'm now stuck on the hook for only $23 - $27K per year rather than $50K.
