We have been underwhelmed and disgusted by school board. 4th and 6th graders that have been here since K. The county has mismanaged so much. My kid is in a MS that is old, smelly and a sea of trailers. It's so over-crowded they can't wear backpacks and have lunch at 10am. Meanwhile--we have a school with only 75 6th graders and a fake lottery.
I know which MS you are talking about bc we went to the orientation. They have to share lockers??!! Meanwhile, the 6th grader got a low number on the lottery, which makes me think we would have gotten in if the lottery wasn't fake.
SHARE LOCKERS?!?!?!? The horror! I shared a locker in middle school, and believe it or not, I have lived to tell the tale. I also went to an old, smelly middle school. It's these kinds of challenges that really prepared me for life. Are you people serious with this stuff? Are these hardships worth even 2 seconds of thought? Who cares if 12-year-olds share lockers? Suck it up, snowflakes.
Meanwhile we have two country club schools. My kids thought Discovery was private because it was so much nicer than their 1950 building. I think the huge expense for schools in areas not needed when the County is facing crisis population numbers is a reason everyone is so upset. HB is getting a spanking new HS and takes up valuable seats , space now while other kids are in 27 trailers in a faculty parking lot.
HB would have stayed in its building and they could have built a new 1,300 seat middle school at the Wilson site that would have pulled tons of kids out of trailers. North Arlington parents shut that down. Don't complain about HB, those parents wanted it to stay where it was.
HB fought tooth and nail to avoid adding any additional seats to Wilson. They wouldn't even consider letting preschoolers exist in the same building. Behind the scenes, we heard them say it was because they never wanted the possibility that their school size might increase. Yes - we could have had a neighborhood school at Wilson, but it made more sense to put a neighborhood school where the seats were most needed. This also saves money on busses. The most disgusting action was when HB parents got the head of Arlington's NAACP. To say that moving their program would be racist! This - from a school that is the second least diverse in the county and from a program that wasn't even in existence when the Stratford school was desegregated. James Lander was amazingly tactful when. He shit down the racist accusations.
