Thanks everyone for the great advice and helpful tips! The hotel is the Alvear Palace. I am now looking at flights :D Can someone with experience at the Miami airport let me know if you think an hour and 13 minute layover is long enough? I've never been there and would hate to miss the connecting flight. (I've already ruled out two flights w/ 43 minutes and 50 minutes in Atlanta/DFW respectively.) It seems like every flight is either a super short layover (or a ridiculously long one like 12 hours), or on an airline I'm not so sure about...LATAM, Avianca, COPA...
This is PP. We took very early 6am flight from DCA to Miami, next flight was in same terminal so not far of a walk, had plenty of time. And I had kids with me, we were able to manage. Landed in BA 8:45 pm their time (2 hrs ahead from D.C.). At apartment by 10pm. No jet lag, tired but ok. We were completely ready to go next morning. Flight back was a red eye. 9pm flight to Miami, got into Miami at 3:45 am (brutal but ok).went through immigration and customs, out and at next gate by 4:45 for 6am flight.was at DCA by 9:30. We only had carry on which helped. Flying via Dallas adds HOURS to your flights because it's going west and BA is east of here. So you fly in a zigzag, west to get to Dallas and then backtrack west from Dallas to BA. Probably adds 3-4 hours to travel time. The key for us was taking that first flight out of DCA, because it was less likely to be delayed, and meant no red eye going down there. Flying back same thing, you're getting into Miami so early, you should be fine with connection.
