Is this an American thing? Coming from abroad (France), families don't have the expectation that the first 4 years of university are going to be special. There isn't the dorm/campus experience for many students anyway, who rent rooms or continue to live at home, and sororities/fraternities don't exist. You just go about your usual business of furthering your education, make new friends, get jobs or go on to further years of study, and that's it.
I'm the one who only went out twice in college, am third generation American, and the way you view college is the way I viewed it too. If there was greek life at my colleges, I didn't know of it. I was just trying to work and get through school to get an even higher paying job.
