Question for Barca families, specifically the 09 program. We tried out and am interested in joining but I'm confused about league play for them next year. I've been he would be placed on a team that would either play in EDP or ODSL (Big gap, but that is besides the point). What wasn't clear was if would start in the Fall or Spring. Any idea? I've heard both.
So you don't know which league you would play in? Why would you agree to join if you have no idea what they are selling you?
Because their sales pitch isn't based on what league they're going to play in, it's based on the training they provide. As part of that, they say they will try to place teams where they can get competitive matches. That won't be enough for everyone, and that's fine. If league placement is that important to some parents (and clearly it is, based on the number of "which league is better" questions posted on this board), Barca is probably not the right fit. But they've always been very clear on what they're selling, and what they're not.
I disagree that Barca was clear on what it was selling. The announcement that some teams will be placed in ODSL took families by surprise and parents/players had no advance warning about the plan to join ODSL. Barca initially marketed itself as an elite level program and parents were told repeatedly at team meetings that the plan was to eventually compete at the national level in each age group. This winter Barca shifted its focus to increasing the revenue stream and added more players mid-season most of whom came from low level teams of other clubs. This further diluted the overall quality of the player pool and, thus, the quality of training.
