Your rationale is not applicable to the 2017s, who are also adopting the cohort approach. There are certainly players on McKennie that would start for Pulisic - even if you may be correct that Pulisic is, at this point in development, the stronger team.
It is applicable. Only changing it for one birth year would be too “obvious.” So there is a trickle down effect, for however long that lasts. Bethesda boys are now attempting to market “pods” for the u-littles to mask that one is actually A1, A2, A3, and so on. (“X and Y team are pod 1, B and C team are pod 2,” etc). It is clever, and people are falling for it and don’t realize initially that their kid is actually on the fourth team. And yes, it began with a specific cohort for a very specific reason.
Correct, most of the families on the young boys side knows why the 2016s aren’t tiered Academy 1, 2, 3, blue, etc. JC and BC each have a son in that cohort. It’s a relatively deep group but not deep enough to have two B+ teams that can be competitive. Maybe that’s OK, but they’re not winning tournaments like the Jeff Cup or Super Copa without one team that has all the best players (look up the scores from the U9 Jeff Cup for 2025). The 2017 cohort isn’t as strong and will suffer even more but you can’t only have cohorts in 2016 and not any other years, might raise suspicion. It’s their little fiefdom and they can decide what benefits them personally the most. Anyone who doesn’t like it can leave, and many have. There are lots of coaches at the club whose kids aren’t on the top teams but merit based rules don’t appear to apply to the Directors.
