It sounds like the father was right there with the boy if the father got scratched by the gator.  They had been seeing others in that water, they weren't out swimming in it.  They were having carefree fun and then this unthinkable tragedy happened.  If they had thought for a second that something like that could happen to their precious little boy they would never have gotten near that water.

Now the rest of us can learn from it.  That's all we can do with this heartbreaking lesson.[/quote]

From what I understand from alligator experts, if the father/another adult was right there with the child, the alligator probably wouldn't have attacked.  The gator would have been scared off by the size of the adult.  I think the boy was alone, but the parents were nearby and able to quickly go after the gator once they realized what was happening.  The boy was the size of small prey and probably made splashes like small prey.[/quote]

The dad [b]was[/b] right there, PP.  We know b/c he was injured trying to save his kid.  If he hadn't been right there, the alligator would have swam away too fast for him to actually intervene.  Stop trying to make this the parent's or the kid's fault.[/quote]
