Do kindergarteners have this level of cognition where they ask questions about "unknown words" in a text? Aren't they still in the absorption phase of language acquisition? People at lower levels of language acquisition will often be in what is known as the "silent period" where they are taking things in, but not expressive yet. Being able to explain the meaning would be a higher level I would think. But I'm not a kindergarten teacher.
