Kathryn is a white trash hick with a good family name. Her dad is some sort of land surveyor. They are probably living off some family money that is basically dried up.
Lack of family money in Charleston is irrelevant to how you are viewed South of Broad. Family name is all in that rigid and insular society.. It's a throwback to Reconstruction. All the society families lost their money and property, and having the good old family name became the main social currency. Money has become more important of late, but I don't think it can get you an invitation to the St. Cecilia.
Kathryn isn't present at St. Cecilia! She's not a Calhoun like some people are Calhouns. Her mother is a descendant somewhere along the line and they desperately hold onto that link by using Calhoun as a middle name in every generation but there is no wealth or reputation there any longer, clearly. She's a Dennis and is descended from Calhoun on one side but has no currency in Charleston society evidenced by the fact her family lives in a run down house in Moncks Corner on land that can't be developed and she's scrambling for alimony from a baby daddy.
Did I say that she was presented at St. Cecilia? But if you look back at the clips from the first season, both Thomas and Whitney mention her family history. Her name is clearly still currency in Charleston.
