You know what I don't want? I don't want gangs of hungry, jobless, desperate people accosting me on the street looking for a handout and possibly threatening worse. I don't want a shantytown where my neighborhood park used to be. I don't want our country to lose its intellectual capital to foreigners because our own population isn't well-educated enough to compete in the global economy. That's why I'm happy to pay taxes, even if they go to priorities that don't benefit me directly. Why are conservatives so totally myopic about this stuff?
+1. Well said. OP, when I was in (private) high school and living a very sheltered life, I was very conservative and very convinced I was right. I now consider myself a centrist. I would urge you to keep an open mind over the next few years. It's amazing how much world is out there. You certainly won't change your mind about everything, but it's unrealistic to think that the views you hold at 18 will not be challenged or changed. Some of them will be and should be and, truly, you should welcome that. That's part of growing up and why you don't see 18-year-olds running things. So, I sincerely urge you to try to keep an open mind as you experience college and the world beyond. I guarantee it will benefit you, whether or not any of your opinions are changed. As you can see from this thread, the reality is that those who dig their heels in and remain intractible are often disregarded by others as unintelligent. Those who show a willingness to listen and an effort to truly understand the other side of an issue are more often the ones who earn the respect of people on both sides.
