Oh I get it now, there's no need for Eastern to improve, or to better serve its catchment area now or at any point down the track. The school is simply wonderful as is. Fantastic! Thank you so much for enlightening us all on the subject. Who knew, a high-performing HS right in our backyard. I repeat, pointless and tiring. DCPS could clearly care less which bums fill seats at Eastern, as long as the bucks per capita continue to roll in. That may change once political heads start to roll over Ward 6 schools issues, maybe 15 years from now. Until then, hang in there, folks.
It appears to me that many gentrifiers want DCPS to kiss their asses & roll out a red carpet for them. Not gonna happen. Why not? Because DC is concerned about 1. Bringing schools up to par for ALL kids to attend. 2. The urgency is for those currently (forced) in the schools. 3. Kids of gentrifiers have options & will be fine wherever they go. Someone's already said "Well to the suburbs or private we go!" DCPS says "Byeeeee! Now let us continue our efforts at improving schools for all." DC does not consider the gentrifiers as necessary for schools to improve. However, they view their attendance as proof that improvements are being made. Two very different things. So, stop lying to yourself about your importance to DCPS. The system has been nearly 100% black since the beginning of time. No one would blink if that never changes. The question has always been: How do we truly serve and educate those (black) kids? If other races join the schools, fine! We can't stop them but we don't need to recruit them either.
You are 100% correct: but don't leave out that the DCPS school system that keeps asking "how do we truly serve and educate ( black ) kids " has failed miserably at it for decades now and continues to ask and have no good answers to that question. Yes, yes there are bright spots and bright students but the VAST MAJORITY have been failed by and even abused by the system for generations now. There is no benefit from hiding this truth. Perhaps it DOES need a student population from a wide range of economic backgrounds tonbeninbthe system for improvement but DCPS is too stupid to know it.
You are also 100% correct: DCPS has been failing kids miserably for decades. They're starting to try to improve the system, have made some inroads but still have a long way to go. But none of that means that having students of other races in the schools will suddenly improve schools and make them better for the poor darkies. If it were that easy, DCPS would've started a recruiting campaign years ago. You really seem to overestimate your importance (race, SES) in this school thing. Truth is, no one cares if you head to the burbs or privates. Most secretly applaud you because frankly we do the same and/or don't blame you.
It did. Michelle Rhee was a very public face of it, Kaya Henderson is a milder one. Hell yes, they want high SES families in the mix, and they especially want white families (there are no low-SES white families in DC, which is why "white" is such a go-to proxy for high SES). Bring the white kids, use them to buttress test scores, and then try to spread them around like butter. No, nobody gives a damn about their education, but they are far more reliable for bringing up test scores than anything else DCPS has tried to throw at the classrooms.
