I said this in the other thread, but I thought this was a great moment of comic relief in an otherwise tedious broadcast. This and 45 Seconds were the best parts of the night. The Grammy producers ought to send West giant effing fruit baskets year round and reserve him front row seats into perpetuity. This is a committee that awarded best album to an album that sold 300,000 copies (as compared to Beyonce's 5 million). Not that it's all about popularity, but c'mon! 300k! Even Beck thought Beyonce would win! (Beck also encouraged West to come back onstage after he smiled and went back.) This is a committee that doesn't even broadcast the rap awards. This is a committee that awarded best metal album to Tenacious D. C'mon! The Grammys are kind of a joke. I'm tired of all the white privilege on display and celebrated at award shows. At least Kanye is abrasive, but he's not wrong.
Beck plays actual instruments and is a real musician. Beyonce just shakes her ass. She's an entertainer; slightly more talent than a stripper. Beck may have not sold as many records but the "masses" aren't the best arbiters of taste (or musical sophistication).
Beck did not take his own album very seriously. He considered it a prelude to his more artistically serious next album that he's been working on for a year. Beck himself thought Beyonce would win. He didn't mind that West got up on stage. He smiled and said "come back!" after he left. It's a lovely album with some beautiful songs, but it sure wasn't beautiful enough to make an impression on most of America, many of whom were scrambling to remember anything they'd heard from it before. Nice album? Of course. Album of the year? Come. On. Only if you are an old white dude and your version of heavy metal is Tenacious D.
