That marble bathroom is ostentatious to the point of being tacky. It looks like something Donald Trump would put in his penthouse. And I like marble in limited doses.
+1. A Saudi prince's bathroom.
You can't pass judgement unless you have the same amount of money to budget a bathroom of this caliber. I doubt the saudi prince will put 50s retro subway tiles in their bathroom. Once you reach a certain budget or house value you will need to put in high end materials and subway tiles is not high end. It's like trying to say that a silver sterling ring is better than the pure platinum one.
And some of us would rather wear a simple and tasteful sterling ring than a gaudy overdone platinum one! Give me a nice period subway and wainscot any day over those marble McMonstronsities.
So you would serve mcdonalds for your wedding reception
Not the same thing at all. Wow. It's really hard to get some people to understand the concept of "tacky." It doesn't matter how monetarily valuable DonaldcTrump's house is -- it's tacky and plenty of us wouldn't trade for it. I might trade for the lot nd square footage, but not the gaudy finishes.
Tacky and gaudy are a measure of opinion. Cost of materials is a fact. Marble costs more than ceramic subway tiles.
Very true, but you can make marble either tasteful or tacky. I love marble too and just put it in our bathroom. But it can also be overdone and tacky. I'm just saying that liking the appearance of subway tile doesn't make a person either jealous of marble owners, and subway tile can be appropriate in all price ranges. We all have different tastes and that's what makes things interesting. When I went tile shopping I saw plenty of beautiful tile that I can't afford and beautiful tile I can afford. I also saw plenty of expensive tile that you couldn't pay me enough to put in my home because to my eye it was gaudy. The value didn't matter to me. That's all I was trying to say.
I'd imagine that the marble monstrosities probably appeal to people from other cultures. In large quantities and vibrant colors/patterns it just looks vulgar to my puritan tendencies. :D I like - and have used - small doses.
