What happens if they don't get in? What is the big deal? Do they actually teach 2 separate curriculum for each grade? Or is it just a little bit different? Except for math. I can see how that one is different, but the rest?!?
The curriculum is the same, except math is one year head. For high performing schools with compacted math, the difference is minimal. Most of the general education students in wealthy area are performing above grade level so the depth and pace is increased. In lower performing schools, the difference can be great. Poorer areas with large ESOL and FARMs populations have a disproportional number of struggling students. The depth and pace of instruction slow down as a result. This is why many parents in lower performing schools are so worked up. You see a lot of higher income areas where many of the students choose to stay at their base school and not change to the center school as its not worth the hassle.
