Indiana. My mom and grandparents were from there and I spent summers there. Nicest people ever!
We moved a lot while I was growing up. I have another half dozen places to compare Indiana to in terms of living there--not just visiting-- and Hoosiers are my least favorite people. White Hoosiers are the most racist people I've ever encountered. (I'm white.)They are incredibly insular; anyone who isn't from Indiana, Kentucky, or parts of Ohio is suspect. It's also the least intellectual place I've ever lived. Goes to show you--different strokes for different folks.
That’s funny- I’m from Ohio and I think certain parts of Ohio contain very nice people and we viewed Indian with suspicion. Which is weird because the western flat part of Ohio is basically East Indiana. I never thought about Kentucky much but I’ve raised a child far away in a state that’s full of grumpy meanies. When we went to Kentucky recently (as one does) she laughed at me because all the cashiers and rental car workers and grocery store clerks and random people in the Kroger line were so chatty. She said “mom, now I know why you always embarrass me by talking to everyone in public. It’s normal here.”
