New shutdown plans from the White House: fire everyone who is not essential. https://www.politico.com/news/2025/09/24/white-house-firings-shutdown-00579909 These guys are so dumb. They're already canceling DRP and rehiring from Musk's dumb hatchet job. So dumb, it's pitiful.
Restricting it to mandatory appropriations and law enforcement means that everyone is RIF'd (GSA, Interior, HHS etc.) And once things open up, they'll have to find all those employees and rehire them? How will they RIF people if HR is furloughed. These guys aren't the sharpest pencils in the box.
Be that as it may, I think this ends the shutdown threat. Remember allll those people who said things like, "Trump can't just close agencies." "They can't just fire people." Tell that to all the people that are now out of jobs. There's no way Schumer and Jeffries are going to risk this. The base can be frustrated and scream, but the practical reality is that the Dems don't have a lot of plays here.
Agreed. They never did have a play. Supporting Obamacare premium hikes is a good idea, but in this case the best play is to let the Rs own the mess. Have Fetterman and 6 other senators who are not up for reelection vote for the CR and if the premiums go up, point to OBBBA. That pain is not going away and several vulnerable Rs know it.
1. republicans didn’t even want to vote for their own bill in the Senate. They might as well end the filibuster. Why have the filibuster when it doesn’t matter because. There’s no debate anyway. Trump will do whatever he wants. Who cares about a filibuster when you’ve already lost democracy. 2. Democrats don’t need to vote for the CR. They just need to vote for cloture. If we are looking at a three month shut down or a complete firing, maybe just vote for clôture and have the Republicans carry the weight of all their decisions.
