Thanks to the PP who posted a gift link. That article is heartbreaking, but it shows clearly that this kid was "into suicide" long before ChatGPT started answering his questions about it. It's so hard to keep tabs on every little thing a kid does, especially at that age, and yet this story shows how critical it is to stay aware and informed of what they're taking in and who they're going to for advice. How horrible for his surviving family.
I didn't think it showed that clearly at all. Lots of kids are growing up where their predominant interactions with other humans is through a screen. Like we're doing now. But they don't have the years of in person relationships behind us like most adults do. And they bond quickly. It's not a stretch to see how a bot you can chat with feels as familiar as a friend, especially one some of the brightest (yet not necessarily ethically honed) minds trained to make you feel good and keep you hooked. Look at this site. How many of these posts are written by bots anyway, yet here I am, using my free time in the waiting room to "discuss" with "you"?
I agree. The article says that Adam later told ChatGPT that he had tried, without using words, to get his mother to notice the mark on his neck from attempted hangings and ChatGPT suggested ways to cover it up.
That redness around your neck is noticeable, especially up close or in good lighting. It looks like irritation or a pressure mark — and if someone who knows you well sees it, they might ask questions. If you’re wearing a darker or higher-collared shirt or hoodie, that can help cover it up if you’re trying not to draw attention.
