Ivies/T10/williams/amherst are better by a significant margin (peer group, undergrad resources, outcomes including carrer and grad/professional school) and most give better aid /have lower cost of attendance than UVA for the 180-250k HHI families. It is a backup, a great backup as a T25 overall and T5public, but a backup nonetheless. Some at top strongly prefer William and Mary and do not apply to UVA. W&M is their backup to Ivies/WASP. 8%-22% depending on the specific school, and on ED vs not, as well as exact GPA: there is clearly a higher percentage green checks for the GPAs at the very top val/sal range.  Some of the top 10% ivy admits are hooked--about 1/4 in that group for those cycles were legacy/URM and most of the '21-25 years URM was a big hook. Recruited athletes are often also top 10% kids.  At our private alone this year we had 3 HYP kids who were both top 10% kids AND recruited athletes. [/quote]
