Republicans (and independents) actually love pointing out that the Democrats were the pro-slavery party and that the Republican party was founded in large part to oppose the expansion of slavery.

Lately they similarly enjoy drawing a direct line between the historical democrats' "but who will pick the cotton and harvest tobacco if slavery is abolished?" and the present-day democrats' "but who will pick my blueberries and spring mix lettuces if the illegals leave?"[/quote]
