Goodness, we're really scraping the bottom of the barrel in education, aren't we?
This is what happens when parents get confused and think they control what happens in schools and seek to micromanage curricular and individual classrooms. The good teachers had enough and quit. So, we brought it on ourselves in recent years. We get what we deserve, and we deserved this.
Yeah, no. That’s not the problem, dingbat.
Actually that's exactly what has happened and is happening. Nearly half of the teachers at my school are planning to quit or retire next year. It's not even the behavior or lack of support anymore. It's the micromanagement. The brilliant out of the box teachers are gone if not ground to dust. The teachers with unique styles or approaches or passions that could enliven their classrooms and make a year memorable are gone or are actively being harassed and degraded and told they need to be robot automatons doing exactly what the teacher next door is doing at exactly the same time. It's asinine. All the joy has been sucked out of teaching and all that remains is allegiance to "fidelity"...meaning everyone in lockstep.
That’s so depressing. Nobody remembers their favorite teacher - the one who had a dramatic impact on the course of their life - as the one who conformed the best… You remember the one who had unique approach or passion for their subject. Who cares whether everyone got question #27 of SOL correct? Should care about fostering those who are trying to make a meaningful difference in a students life. That’s what matters.
