There are 2 FCPS teachers in my neighborhood and in talking to both of them, one took a position with APS for next school year and the other is trying to leave for APS or ACPS. Both of which pay better than FCPS. FCPS seems particularly “squeezed” in this regard. APS, ACPS, and probably DCPS all pay better. PWC, Loudoun, and points further out pay about the same as FCPS but it’s cheaper to live in the exurbs.
People seem to forget that FCPS has an additional retirement program (ERFC) that none of the other counties have. That counts for a lot. I get that everyone wants more money now, but I think it is shortsighted to just look at annual pay. APS has its own issues, and is only scheduled for a 1% raise next year.
I agree, but I also wonder how many 22 year old graduates are thinking they’ll stay in teaching for 33 years to get that full ERFC benefit. If they don’t see that in their future then the money now in their net pay might be more appealing (and I write this as someone who has taught for 30+ years and will benefit from ERFC).
