Okay, think about it. That number is the average of a whole bunch of people across the age spectrum. Given the way the population pyramid looks in a developed country like the USA, a large share of people are over the age of 40. This means that a large share of people were single and young back when there was no birth control pill (danger of pregnancy) and when it was the norm to marry before age 25.

If you look at the kids who are in college today and will turn 21 when they graduate, they're likely to have a hell of a lot more than 7.2 partners by the time they get married. They have access to so many more sexual partners thanks to tech things like Tinder. They don't have the same degree of religious pressure as the Gen X people and older did. They have access to vaccines that protect them from things like HPV and great birth control. And they will marry later in life compared to Gen X and older. This cohort might have an average of 25+ partners throughout life! And don't forget that they'll be more likely to divorce than prior generations (since women earn enough to leave when unhappy) so they'll have another round of being single after they divorce when their number will go up even more.[/quote]

This forum leans middle age. Hundreds of partners is incredibly high number for either gender for those currently in their 40-60s. The dating technologies were not there yet, when these people were 20.
