I don't think he did anything wrong. He had as much right to be out that night as anyone else. He also had as much right to defend himself as anyone else. I don't think we can accept a standard where only people with anti-police viewpoints are allowed to be out on the streets during protests.
You’re probably the first to chastise people for their bad choices and say they have to live with the consequences of those choices and should have know better. Only a fool would go hunting for rioters during a volatile time. We are not a vigilante society.
I don't think what he did was wise. But lots of teens make unwise decisions that aren't criminally wrong. He got into enormous trouble but the case against him was weak. Those are consequences. Also, the people who attacked him experienced the consequences of their actions. Once as a young woman, I did something unwise. I want walking at night. I took a gun to be safe as it wasn't a very safe area. I liked to run and walk at night, when it was cool outside. I passed two men and a moment later, I instinctively checked behind me and they had turned and were walking toward me. I drew my weapon and pointed at one of the men, and they backed off and I took off running. I can sympathize with KR because i also went places I shouldn't have gone, done things that sensible women usually don't do, and that made me vulnerable to attackers in the same way he was. What if those men hadn't backed off? I surely would have shot them. And then all the same things could be said of me: she shouldn't have been walking. Why did she do that? Why did she bring a loaded gun and walk in an unsafe place? Was she "hunting" predatory men and is therefore a murderer? Kyle was a young, dumb kid. But he had every right to be in that protest without being attacked.
