I thought pedestrians in crosswalks have the right of way at intersections without a light?
Yes, they do. Also, there are crosswalks at every intersection, even where there isn't any paint. The law treats crosswalks with paint and crosswalks without paint exactly the same, in terms of right of way.
But they don’t have the right to step into the street any time they want. Drivers can’t read your mind.
Yes, pedestrian do have a right to step into a crosswalk at any time they want. That's why drivers are supposed to obey the law, and stop at the crosswalk.
You are wrong on this. Drivers don’t have to anticipate negligence of pedestrians. And cars, trucks and buses can’t stop on a dime. Pedestrians do not have an unfettered right to step off a curb.
Just stop. This is not the place. As a PP pointed out, you are arguing about pedestrian negligence when two children walking WITH AN ADULT in a crosswalk at a 4-way intersection with a flashing light stop sign next to an elementary school during drop off were killed by someone turning left. Start a new thread for your pedestrian complaints.
This entire thread is nothing but baseless speculation and gossip. No one knows if the pedestrians or the driver was at fault.
This thread is about a ten-year-old and a five-year-old who were killed next to their elementary school, during school arrival time, in a painted crosswalk, at an intersection with a four-way stop, by a driver who was turning left. Get out of here with your "no one knows if the pedestrians or the driver was at fault" trash.
The PG police chief told the Washington Post that: 1. They have video of the accident 2. The driver stayed on the scene, but the police did not take the driver into custody 3. The presence of a crossing guard would *not* have prevented the accident Weird, right? Maybe we don't know all the answers yet.
No, that's not weird at all, actually. It's quite typical.
