+1. Use 1st St NW to get to school. If you are still uncomfortable you can ask to transfer to Calle 8 next year.

really? have you read this thread? with all the former MV parents outlining very real problems? This is coming from people on the outside. I live in this neighborhood, know went in with a lot of excitement, and then were so disappointed, and who have all since moved (mostly to better DCPS schools). they are much more upset about MV than anyone on the outside.

People are telling PP not to be excited because of the school, however, PP is worried about the neighborhood, not the school. She already chose MV. She can transfer to Calle 8 next year.

People who leave MV go private (WIS) or move, they don't go back to their IB Title 1 school.[/quote]

I do NOT have a kid at any of these schools - mine's at a non-immersion Title I - but as someone who knows DCPS for professional reasons, I'd frankly consider Cleveland and Tyler over MV, given what I've heard from others' experiences at all three. (Consider, as in take a hard look and research, not consider as in definitely switch). Absolutely would go to Oyster or Bancroft over MV, probably B-M. (They need to change that acronym!) [/quote]

We're at one of those schools and yes, kids switch from MV to our immersion DCPS every year. We have a new kid from MV in my second grader's class this year. You still get a few upper grade kids moving to MV for DCI, but since the DCI guarantee ended, there isn't the exodus after pre-K like previously. And yes, every family at a DCPS immersion in K and up is choosing that DCPS over MV. Too many unhappy stories on the playground to gamble with a school switch, even before the parent protests at the end of last year. [/quote]

I’m an extracurricular volunteer leader and over the years have had kids from BM, Marie Reed, Bancroft, MV, DCB, LAMB, etc. Believe me that there is no consistent difference between the kids I work with between these schools. There are strong, average, and weaker students from all of these schools. I am 100% certain after dozens of kids over close to 10 years of experience that there is really not as much of a difference academically at the elementary school level as DC parents think, which is also what the data on outcomes for higher SES kids shows.

There is a notable difference in the private school kids though. Their writing and math is much better in middle elementary. Reading, science, and general world knowledge (like social studies type knowledge) is very individual and dependent on the kid and family.

I don’t think middle or high school is too late for any kids to “catch up” and it all even out, but I’m also not sure that any of the public middle school options (namely Deal/JR and DCI) are good enough to do that either. They seem like more of the same - namely fine enough, but not enough to push the brightest kids to achieve fully to their potential.

Ultimately I tell parents to do what they want, but not worry too much about elementary. Take those years to figure out what outcomes you really want, then make choices by middle school. But don’t think you can really “win” the DC school game without compromising. [/quote]
