Can someone succinctly explain the conspiracy theory about the movie being made (if it's not really a movie about human trafficking)?
It's a movie about human trafficking, it pretends to be based on real life but it's actually heavily fictionalized, overdramatized, and has many misportrayals of the nature of actual human trafficking. Also it sends some bad and ill-advised messages, like taking the law into ones own hands (for example has scenes where the main character goes into the jungle alone, where he kills someone to retrieve trafficked children etc). It also makes it primarily about trafficking children when in fact adults are also trafficked for sex, for slavery and other purposes. And some of the people involved in making/producing the film are QAnon or QAnon-adjacent, as are most of the people doing the heaviest promoting of the film - they are using it to further their sick and twisted conspiracy theories and blood libel of how some "global cabal" of "political elites, billionaires, hollywood" are supposedly drinking childrens blood or "sacrificing them in satanic rituals" or extracting some kind of mythical "adenochrome" elixir from their bodies in order to achieve immortality. It's hard to be succinct about something so deranged without showing how deranged it is, but that was my stab at it. Again, I think we ALL agree that human traffickers need to be cracked down on and put behind bars, but the QAnon conspiracy theories are really over-the-top and are likely to cause more harm than good. After all it's already driven people to shoot up pizza parlors and other things.
It does not pretend to be based on real life story, IT IS based on real life. It does not pretend to be a documentary, so most characters are fictitious.
It's NOT based on real life. Many people including experts on human trafficking have come forward to point out that it's full of fictional embellishments, misportrayals and mischaracterizations. Also, many of the things claimed about Ballard, such as the portrayal of him as a former DHS and CIA operative have been called into question. The biggest problem I have with what's going on is that anyone who dares to question any of the problematic aspects of the film is immediately accused of being a pedophile, or somehow being on the side of human traffickers, or being part of some fictitious global satanic cabal. That's absolutely false and deranged. I for one DO want human traffickers arrested, but I also believe in truth, and I have legitimate concerns about films like this potentially doing more harm than good.
If you have legitimate concerns, why dont' you produce your own documentary that accurately portrays the situation instead of criticizing someone's effort to fight it?
