I miss the times of moderates in VA.
What specifically do you mean by "moderate"?
times when candidates mattered more than party, when democrats would win seats in southwest virginia and republicans would win in fairfax.
What positions are "moderate" in 2023?
Still waiting to hear what these "moderate" positions are in 2023.
Realistically, a moderate that would represent the whole country would be a Joe Manchin. The country as a whole leans socially liberal, but economically a little more conservative.
So a moderate is pro-life, anti same sex marriage, anti environmental protections, etc? Nope. That’s Republican. Manchin is a DINO.
Manchin is the average of the far left and far right. You’re just upset because you think the country as a whole is super far left, which it isn’t. First of all, he’s not pro life or anti sex marriage, you just wouldn’t know because he doesn’t make it his entire persona to correct people on the correct use of pronouns. And he’s not anti environmental protections, he tries to bridge together the working class with futuristic energy plans. Representing America as a whole means standing up for agricultural and appalachian states, not only California.
A moderate is not pro-life, anti gay marriage, anti environment, etc. He very publicly states that he is pro-life. And votes accordingly. He's voted against gay marriage/LGBTQ rights multiple times. He's voted against environmental protections many times. https://www.manchin.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/manchin-statement-on-scotus-decision-to-overturn-roe-v-wade “As a Catholic, I was raised pro-life and will always consider myself pro-life. But I have come to accept that my definition of pro-life may not be someone else’s definition of pro-life. I believe that exceptions should be made in instances of rape, incest and when the life of the mother is in jeopardy. But let me be clear, I support legislation that would codify the rights Roe v. Wade previously protected. I am hopeful Democrats and Republicans will come together to put forward a piece of legislation that would do just that.” when it actually did come to a vote: https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1172/vote_117_2_00065.htm#position "Senate Democrats' attempt to enshrine the abortion protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law resoundingly failed Wednesday, with one of Democrats' own members, Sen. Joe Manchin, joining every single Republicans to tank the legislation." He's no "moderate". He's a Republican.
