Rep. Craig attacked by a repeat offender in February. The Paul staffer last month. Now this. How many high profile and senseless attacks do we need before people wake up?
NE DC really is a sht-hle is what I am concluding. I got roasted on here for saying this a while back, but I ended up at the PG County Mall for lunch and ubered back to NE DC. Despite the rep of “PG County” and that mall, it was actually perfectly nice and not at all sketchy. The worst places I saw as I ubered back were absolutely NE DC on Bladensburg.
Agree with you on PG, I go to that mall all the time and it’s really not sketchy. But there are perfectly fine parts of NE, and there are plenty of spots in NW that are just as sketchy as many in NE. There really is no “one size fits all” for any quadrant.
I have not seen ANYWHERE in NW that comes anywhere near NE levels of sketch. I know that there are plenty of shootings and carjackings, but I have not seen anything like the zombie gatherings at the Starburst.
Um, so you never been to parts of Shaw, Columbia Heights, U st corridor, Georgia Ave thru Brightwood...? Or those don't count as "ANYWHERE in NW"?
Yes I have, and nothing comes close to Bladensburg going down to H St in terms of the mad-max feel. They do have crime but not the same vibe at all. I’d walk down 7th St or U st at night with few concerns. I try to avoid the Starburst even during the day. My sense is that you have never actually walked through these areas if you think U St is anywhere comparable. Maybe the one spot that comes closest is N Cap and NY Ave - but that’s NE/NW. Anyway, my point is that it’s one thing to live in a neighborhood that is relatively functional and well-organized (even if it has crime), like Shaw and Brightwood. Quite another to see the complete loss of control over public space and open dysfunction in places like Bladensburg (including the Ivy Motel.)
I am the PP that said there’s no one size fits and I do see what you mean. Georgia Ave or U Street can get weird but they span functional neighborhoods and have plenty of retail and foot traffic. The Ivy City area is a totally different type of sketchy. Although, there still are plenty of functional areas of NE like Brookland, Woodbridge, Riggs Park.
