You do you, friend. In my experience, pushing backfires. My kids are friends with kids that are pushed so I’ve seen the underbelly. But hey, your kids. Parent them how you wish (absent abuse, which is a different matter and no one is talking about).
Nah I know plenty of kids that were pushed and they are all at the top of everything they are going to great schools and they are ok. They are stressed but at this point the kids know themselves they want to succeed and stress is part of it. When my kids were younger I listened to people like you and really end up realizing if you don’t push kids do nothing. It is the very rare exception of kid who is intrinsically motivated without parental involvement. But I do disagree with the OP on pushing math. Better to learn it well in the early grades and if that means going slower so be it. If you go to fast and learn it in crappy way in the early years it sets a kid up for a harder time later on.
+1. South Asian mom here. Totally agree. I would add, create opportunities for developing friendship with driven kids (with committed parents). Once your kids are in 8th grade their peer group keeps them motivated. Then you just want to watch them and make sure they are not taking on too much. I remember my kids enthusiastically started piano when they were 6. Around 8-9 it was a big task reminding them to practice every day for 20 mins. Now in 8th grade, my son practices 30-45 mins every day with very little reminders. He just got comfortable working very hard. Take on most advanced classes, but pick one class in middle school which is fun and may not attract the most competitive kids- Theatre for my kid was a stress buster after all the academic classes.
