Okay so…. SYC is not in MLS Next. They’re in the MLS Next Intra-League. The only academy SYC will play is DC United. If DC United doesn’t take any SYC players, that shows you just how poorly SYC is doing. The purpose of MLS Next Intra League is to move played in MLS academies.
You don’t understand what is going on with the league. They also play Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union at all age groups. The MLS academy matches are in addition to regional schedules.
Agreed, people keep getting confused about the league vs. intra-league on the MLS Next website. If you look at it, you will see everyone plays everyone else twice each year. One at home, one away. Everyone that is in their division. The local division is Mid-atlantic. DCU red bull and union are in that mid-atlantic division and play each other and every other team in the mid atlantic division twice. one counts as league the other as inter-league. They split up the games between league and inter-league just to confuse everyone I guess. but there is no other secret MLS NEXT league where only DCU is going out to secretly play other MLS pro team's academies. You are either in or out. This isn't an ECNL vs. ECNL-R situation. At least not today.
You're wrong about there not being "another league" where only DCU goes out to play other MLS pro team's academies. The U15 and U17 DCU teams play a large number of games against many of the other MLS academies from Toronto in the north to Chicago in the west to Orlando in the south - games which non-DCU teams do not play. This doesn't happen at U16 because most MLS academies don't have a U16 team. It's not quite as split as ECNL and ECNL-R - but there is definitely a two tier league.
Proof? Show us that schedule? The results? Where is this all posted?
It's not hard to find. Use this link https://www.mlssoccer.com/mlsnext/standings/2021-2022/u15_mls-next-standings and scroll down. You wll notice that the bottom four divisions are all MLS only. If you scroll down to the Boys U15 East (North) division and expand the list under DCU, you will see that they have played games against Charlotte, Atlanta, Orlando, Nashville, NYCFC, PU, New England, and have further games scheduled against NYRB, Toronto, Montreal, New England, NYCFC, PU, Montreal, and Miami. The same is true for the U17s. Since there are no MLS teams in the U19 age bracket and only DCU fields a U16 team this is really not all that different from ECNL and ECNL-R. Also the best eleven players start all these games. Against the non MLS clubs, DCU (and I assume the other MLS clubs too) typically plays most of the game with its top players on the bench. And at the current showcase the U15 and U17 MLS teams are playing an entirely separate tournament. There are very few MLS U16 teams and no U19 teams, so in effect there are two separate competitions going on - one for MLS and the other for non-MLS teams.
