Imagine being a vocal proponent of removing SROs the day a school shooting finally finds its way into Alexandria. It's just a matter of time, afterall Know that we will all blame you for the kid's deaths if you supported removing the police.
And your blame will be misplaced because ACPS has its own security department who should have procedures in place to address who can and cannot enter the building. If those procedures are good enough for the elementary schools, they should be good enough for the middle and high schools.
Unarmed. I suppose they will stop a shooter's bullets by yelling?
So in your view the elementary schools are unsafe at this point without SROs?
Imgine making such a callous statemnet to a Sandy Hook parent.
This isn’t just a straw man- it’s the whole scarecrow!
The straw man argument for keeping the SROs is that they are absolutely necessary to protect against school shootings. SROs came out of the 90’s crime bill and not out of the rise of school shootings. Even after Sandy Hook, the consensus was not to put armed police in elementary schools even with the risk of school shootings. So my question stands, are the vocal advocates on this board for SROs who are belittling the supporters of the change and the council members who voted for it actually advocating for an expansion of the program to elementary schools since their professed justification here is to protect against school shootings? Finally, if a horrible tragedy did happen here in Alexandria, I think the proponents for keeping police out of school will be able to live with their position since there are so many reasons for gun violence / mass shootings in this country including the ease of access to weapons that can be used in mass killings and the lack of mental health care (and identifying people who need such help).
