There is an article today in NYT daily briefing that points out the drawbacks of “progressive” states vaccine programs focused on equity. DC has this problem. So much energy spent on equity and less time on getting shots in arms as fast as possible. The result is slow vaccine distribution. DC has only distributed 53% of its vaccines. Small city and plenty of spots to get it to folks. Yet 47% is not in people’s arms.
This.Holy incompetence batman.
This is the thing. People are determined to cast DC as some success story. We have 700,000 citizens. Let's take out the 100,000 or so that are children. We could have 1/6 of the residents vaccinated by now if we simply mowed through. Did the city not knw a vaccine was coming and start planning? Why in a AA/"Woke" city are they having so much trouble getting AAs to uptake the vaccine? What is the deal with giving ALMOST HALF the allocated vaccine to MD and VA residents? Why so many different sign-ups with a lack of data or accountability? Why are Ward 3 residents being asked to hike to SE creating suspicion/division and inconvenience ? I genuinely think it's appalling that an 80 year old with high risk health and no car is being asked to across the city and then wait in the cold for an Uber to return home. DC is no paragon. We are hovering with a lot of other MUCH bigger states around 9% administered. We are well behind a few states that have figured this out. And as oft-stated, we are tiny (we are a city!). Should not be that hard to create an efficient sign-up / distribution network. There is good news about the Novovax and J + J vaccines, but if DC can't figure out a better way, I am hoping FEMA will swoop in and set up distribution tents. Pitiful.
