McLean https://www.instagram.com/mhs_commitment_day2020/
Impressive placement at top colleges. Even better than past couple of years. Well done! Congrats!
Giving Potomac a run for its $$$$
McLean HS this year ran wild! Just from the small number of students self reported, there are already 10 ivies+Stanford, and a dozen other top schools like Chicago, Duke, Northwestern, JHU, etc. I heard at least one for Yale, but not in this self reported list. Guess they said McLean is a top school in NoVA for a reason. Congratulations to all!
That's interesting. Why does McLean have more Ivy and top school admissions than Langley? They can probably compete with Whitman, B-CC and many of the well-known privates.
Nope, they cannot.
No point in extrapolating from posts by kids who only account for somewhere between 1/3 and 1/4 of the classes. No public school that isn't TJ can compete with privates when it comes to the percentage of kids getting into top schools. As to how Langley and McLean measure up against public schools in MoCo, you have to consider the number of kids from the pyramids who go to TJ (about 40 per class from each of Langley and McLean) and decide whether to include UVA in the "top school" category. Whitman isn't losing the same number of kids to MoCo magnets as Langley and McLean do to TJ, and more Ivy grads whose kids may benefit from legacy admissions live in Chevy Chase than McLean.
More legacy from Chevy Chase than McLean, why is that? Is it because more private schools there than in McLean?
DP. There are zero stats to back that up - the PP making the claim is simply making a claim. No one has any clue which area has more legacies.
I went to my Ivy alumni directory and checked for undergraduates who graduated between 1975 and 2000, which seemed like it would pick up the senior parent cohort. This is what I got for different suburbs: Arlington 214 Bethesda 206 Chevy Chase 122 McLean 74 Falls Church 56 Vienna 42 This doesn't prove, but is consistent with, the notion that there are probably more legacies in MoCo than Fairfax.
