Our parents were always telling us how beautiful we were (that is something EVERY child needs and deserves)... so to even it out he'd say we were hideous. We'd arrive on the weekends to their country home and we'd all run across the fields and our grandfather would be gardening or having his tea outside. When we got close he'd get up, do a startled double take and start running AWAY screaming 'don't let them near me- they're hideous!'

My siblings and I still talk about how that could have impacted our self-esteem but we LOVED it when he did that. As kids you realize (or should) that everyone calls you cute, so when someone doesn't, it presents the unique opportunity to choose to either laugh or to care/fret about it. Again, this can only be done when your family has made you feel accepted, safe and secure. I wish everyone had that.[/quote]
