“More Maryland residents favor than oppose statehood for the District, a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll finds. The survey also shows that Marylanders widely oppose making the District a new county in Maryland, a proposal often offered as an alternative to statehood.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/md-politics/marylanders-narrowly-favor-dc-statehood-unlike-americans-overall-according-to-post-u-md-poll/2019/10/20/8b5f3e4e-f11f-11e9-89eb-ec56cd414732_story.html#click=https://t.co/urttkxvcxv
Yes. DC as a MD county is a good idea. Or simple incorporate into PG and MoCo (east and west). Their politics align nicely. However, the core federal area should remain an independent city. No permanent residents allowed, only federal office buildings, museums, facilities, and monuments. Dems would also be forced to rent their office space to homeless shelters to put their money where their mouth is.
Why and for whom is it a good idea when neither Maryland nor DC want that?
Would give DC congressional representation (which is the whole point, right?) and MD more population and hence additional congressional reps, and also more state tax rev. (albeit with more cost and crime too, but all the MoCo lawyers will have more clients now).
