The GOP just needs to dump Trump. They can easily pivot to another candidate (Jeb, Nikki, Romney) who would attract swing voters and defeat any of the Dem candidates. If they did it now, they might just regain the House and continue to control the Senate.
They can't force him out of office--and therefore out of the running for reelection--without a conviction on impeachment, which will take months. Otherwise, he can decide to run against anyone they put up as a primary challenger.
This will be wrapped up by Christmas.
Don't be so sure. The Nixon impeachment hearings took over a year. The Senate Watergate Committee was formed in February 1973 and delivered its final report in June 1974. Nixon resigned in August 1974.
I hope the Democrats keep this impeachment very narrowly focused on this episode. The Committees can keep going on their many investigations, but impeachment on this specific episode and any obstruction of justice related to it. It would be a very strong case, and I think there's a good shot at getting a conviction in the Senate. Once he's out, I'd like to see the committees continue their investigations. We will ultimately need a full accounting of everything this administration did. Maybe that means a DOJ under a new administration follows up those investigations with criminal investigations like after Watergate. Maybe there is a special committee outside regular government, like after 9/11, with appointees of both parties. I don't know. But get him out, quickly.
You have a lot more faith in McTurtle and senate republicans than I do.
Impeachment is the right thing to do, and may end up helping at the ballot box. The gop senators won’t do jack. Even Sasse.
