Blair has a bunch of negatives against it. Its very small. Your kid is in a small island of smart kids surrounded by kids who are average to dropping out. At TJ everyone is smart. There are incidents and gangs at Blair. TJ is pretty crime free. The non-magnet classes are not very rigorous and designed more for the rest of Blair. This is great if your kid only wants to focus on STEM but not great if your kid is more well rounded. At TJ everyone is smart and the courses all reflect this. Blair pushes and encourages public competitions and since the program is so small kids are pressured to participate. This is good because spots are easier to get but bad if your child is terrified of competitions. At TJ you have to work harder to make the team but if you don't want to compete you can still succeed. Blair has connections within MD but few outside MD. TJ is more plugged into west coast and up the eastern seaboard opportunities.
You clearly don't know this school or it's program and are talking out of your heiny hole. I have had experience with BOTH Blair (my kid) and TJ (me). The other kids at Blair are not "average to dropping out." 2 of DDs best friends came out of MSMs and chose not to apply for any magnets. Lots of bright kids + all the CAP kids. Blair encourages kids to succeed but does not push anything. You have no idea if spots are "easier to get" or not. What does that even matter? Blair is nationally known. Period. Look at the college list. Top universities know this program and even specific courses in it. It is known. Nationally. TJ is also great and nationally known. Give it a rest. I find this tiresome. Now is the time on Sprockets when we dance.
