Regardless of the squabbling here about favoritism (which always exists in all avenues of life and always will), US Soccer doesn't know what they are doing. They are creating less avenues to create talent instead of more. They've created a system of more funneling and less access from the economically challenged player pool. Most winning soccer countries rely upon gritty, poor, pulled up from their bootstraps players to make their national soccer programs great. US Soccer seems to be missing this obvious source of talent. US basketball doesn't miss out on that, and look where we are in that sport (far and away the best in the world - even with other countries catching up a bit). Anyhow, US Soccer could address by requiring "certified rec" leagues (i.e. those playing under USYS) to have all coaches, even volunteer, complete the grass roots training course. Spend funds on intercity and rural programs, instead of those that don't need the help. Decertify all "US Club" leagues as a part of USSF and force ECNL to go to EDP instead, then control the hierarchy of local, state, regional, and national leagues. Set maximum fee levels (based on local cost of living rates) for participating clubs and leagues. Work with sate high school associations to align HS soccer calendars and align leagues so that HS season allows for low travel soccer participation from HS players from U15 and up. Hence re-energizing HS soccer, culture and community spirit - since its free. Use DA teams as true "best of the best" teams for each major metro region - but no more than 1 team per age per "x" million people. Provide ample "pay for free" opportunities for poorer players that make the DA teams. Then, let promotion / relegation and "champions" style leagues take care of the natural good, better, best players / teams below the DA level. Rogue, competing leagues can try to start up - but unless they agree to be part of an organized USSF/USYS structured hierarchy - they are not certified leagues.
Good God. Not every great player is a poor South American. Not every South American is poor either. The whole of Europe plays soccer and it is just as much a middle class game over there as it is here. Just lazy, lazy over generalization.
"Most winning soccer countries rely upon gritty, poor, pulled up from their bootstraps players to make their national soccer programs great." Where did I mention South America in my post? Where did I say that every SA is poor? Where did I say that EVERY good player is poor? Really, all of European soccer is middle class? Just not true. Anyhow, me thinks you're the one using stereo types and assumptions. Re-read what I wrote. Maybe you'll get it the second time. Or not.
