There was a work session on the draft CIP yesterday. Jane Strauss asked the School Board to authorize the inclusion of a reference to a limited boundary study, possibly to take effect in the fall of 2020, that would move the apartments and townhouses in Tysons currently zoned to Spring Hill/Longfellow/McLean to Cooper/Langley. Except for Ilryong Moon, the other SB members seemed hostile to the idea of any amendment to the draft FY 2020-24 CIP to explicitly mention this. They didn't rule out the possibility of moving forward with a study after further discussions in February and March, and Karen Corbett-Sanders told Strauss that not mentioning a possibly boundary change in the CIP wouldn't preclude the initiation of a boundary study later this year. There was a lot of talk about trying to come up with a "holistic" approach to boundary changes at upcoming meetings, and even a possible county-wide redistricting to be developed over the next several years. Of course, they haven't done anything like that for decades, and the actual responsibility for making any changes would then probably fall on the next School Board elected in the fall of 2019. It sounded like Jane Strauss may have waited too late before raising her proposal with the other Board members, and the others were caught by surprise. Or maybe the other Board members were just resistant to another Board member actually trying to get something done when they weren't ready to make similar proposals. It was fairly painful to watch.
NP. With this in mind... what is the point of the meeting on Thursday at 7pm at McLean HS? Is there anything material they plan to discuss on this topic if they are merely brainstorming the possibility of a "limited" boundary study even amongst the SB members? I'd have to change my work schedule so I am just trying to determine if there is an actual discussion plan for this meeting.
