There's a lot of division within the GOP, and a lot of people in the GOP frustrated by the Tea Party takeover. I'm a Democrat, but from time to time I read the National Review online, and I can see where for a lot of people many traditional conservative principles seem very reasonable--but also seem to be very blinded to many realities.

I don't know how old you are, but I remember when Nixon was kinda an epitome of evil--but would be considered practically leftwing these days (he first made universal basic income part of the political discussion, $1000/year for everybody guaranteed).

I also appreciate the idea that in a two party system the two parties act as a restraint against each other. Unfortunately that idea seems to have completely broken down in practice now.
