The Germans are moving to all electric, and as CAFE standards go higher, electrics will be the only way to meet MPG/emissions requirements since US diesel emissions requirements are insane.

Our country is huge and trains don’t work well outside cities. Big diff. I loved taking the train in Germany and around Europe and spent my honeymoon doing so but it’s not feasible here.[/quote]

While I agree, I believe they won't be continuing development on ICE technologies in the long run. Mini for example is going all electric, and BMW is planning to do the same.  China is requiring future cars to be all electric.
