(Sage femme in French means midwife, but translates to wise woman.) Women have always been able to go to midwives for abortions. Not without shame or stigma, of course. But the knowledge has always been around. [/quote] Such women were referred to as wise women as well, and in the context of what you were saying it made perfect sense. Midwives do not perform abortions in this country.[/quote]
