And why should AAP kids at Thoreau get to choose between two schools, when the GenEd kids at Jackson have no such choice and will be relegated to a higher poverty school. Shame on you, Dalia Palchik. And Karen Keys-Gamarra? What a phony.
Frankly, I've always thought it was offensive to the LJ-zoned kids that they were already squished in a severely over-crowded school, and yet, kids from another zone had the right to opt into LJ and make it even more crowded! I would have been so annoyed if my kid was in LJ over the past few years and TMS-AAP kids were opting in to make it more crowded. I guess, in practice, it is only 50 kids per grade... but that's 100 kids extra... and four trailers-worth. So, in some sense the school would have been crowded with or without the TMS opt-in's. But, it's the principle of the matter... kids having the option to make my kids' school more crowded. (If I had been a LJ parent). As it was, I was a TMS parent, and my kid has PLENTY of space over the past two years in a brand new facility. This rezoning should have been done two years ago.
But the TMS-AAP kids still have that option, only now there are more of them being given an option to choose between two schools. FCPS could have eliminated thAT option by simply making Thoreau a center, without also greatly expanding its boundaries. Instead, they've made the worst decision possible, and now they'll just sit back and watch the AAP families gradually move to TMS over the next few years. You should be happy your kids are out of middle schools, because Thoreau likely will end up very crowded with base boundaries that feed into three different high schools.
No. I have one starting at Thoreau next fall. S/he will have a different experience from my older child who is finishing 8th grade. TMS had about 900 kids for the past two years in a big new school. Next year at TMS, they are expecting 1150-1200. It is designed to hold more than that. But, it will not be a easy-going as it was the past two years. The following year, it'll be up to 1350 for sure. I will agree with PPs who said TMS will be at capacity... it looks like it is going to be. The reality is that there are just a boat-load of kids in this zone and LJ's zone. No two ways around it. LJ has been running at 1450+ while TMS has been running at 920.... that is just not right. In the end, they will both be around 1300-1350. Both will be bigger than I would prefer... but that's FCPS for 'ya.
FCPS projects that Jackson would have had fewer than 1150 kids this year and that's based on the assumption that none of the AAP students newly eligible to attend Thoreau would switch to that school. As more of the AAP kids decide to stay at Thoreau, it's going to be Thoreau whose enrollment explodes.
No, that's after they fully implemented the rezoning. They expected about 150 kids for each grade, with the assumption that only the 7th graders would move this fall, then in 2019, all 300 would be in TMS. I'm not sure if the 200+ students coming to TMS in the fall (150 being the re-zoned students) include some rising 8th graders who wanted to switch, or if the excess is from AAP kids opting to stay in-pyramid. Either way, they expected TMS to take on about 300 kids and LJ needed to lose 300. I believe LJ is still expected to gain kids within its zone (based on CIP). There are just a LOT of kids in this area!
