Did anyone else look at this and figure it may have been a drug thing? (Meaning that he was on some sort of drugs and that's what explains how he sounds on the phone; then he ran off and succumbed to the elements?)[/quote]

I don't think he sounds drugged.  There are many versions of the call out there that have been slowed down to see if it helps with clarity. That definitely causes his voice to sound slurred. I don't think there's any indication from his family that he would have taken anything.
