"For girls volleyball, there are dozens of local girls who go on to play division 1 volleyball every year. A decent number of girls from the DMV play (or will play starting this fall) on perennial top 25 teams, including school like Penn State, Louisville, Pitt, Georgia Tech, and Purdue. In the class of 2026, there are players committed to Tennessee, Kentucky, Baylor, Marquette, etc. While most of these players at (or going to) these top programs are coming from Metro Travel teams, there are many girls committed to mid-major D1 teams from other clubs." re: "many" girls committed to mid-major D1 from other clubs" -- is that still true? For 2026, there are still some uncommitted players on the Metro 2026 team itself. VA Juniors has one D1 commit. As far as Paramount and VAE -- have there been any D1 announcements at all? Maybe it's the portal or possible roster limits, but has anyone else noticed that there seem to be fewer current 2026 volleyball players committed near the end of 17s season than in past years? D1 is not the be all and end all, there are D1 colleges that are highly desirable - Michigan, UVA, UNC, UCLA etc etc - all of who have recruited within the DMV recently, then you have ‘D1’ colleges that you’ve never heard of, and, not exactly academic powerhouses (if that’s on your priority list). There are high academic D3 schools that have good teams and your kid might actually get a job at the end of 4 years. The obsession with D1, is about as much to do with parents living vicariously through their kids versus what is a sensible thing to do for their children, I’ve seen parents get excited because their kid goes D1 to a school with a 98% acceptance rate and a 25% graduation rate, with a ranking in the basement. Different strokes for different folks but kids have to get a job at the end of the day and playing D1 volleyball at Eastern Louisiana Technical college (made up) when your kid has a 4.0 GPA, just isn’t good parental guidance.

It really doesn't feel like large numbers of girls are going to top D1 programs. And some go to mid-majors but it feels like lower mid-majors as well. What I don't get is why aren't more girls going to High Academic D3 especially given how much interest there is in these schools in the DMV. The volleyball is good and there is no reason that more girls shouldn't be able to use volleyball to help them get into great schools with sub 15% admissions rates. A quick look at the top high academic D3 programs shows that CA kids outnumber DMV kids 10+ to 1 in conferences like the NESCAC and UAA. Feels like DMV volleyball is missing something here.
