It seems like our society values working outside of the home above all else, particularly children and family life.
Really? Then why are my friends from HS who never got college degrees or left our hometown constantly posting all over facebook about how great and meaningful being a SAHM is and how it is more important than any job? I constantly see people degrading women for working out of the home as opposed to valuing parents who work above SAH. And I agree -- if people are so upset about dual working parents, then more men can volunteer to stay home, but I have a feeling that is not what the PP of this post means.
I am the pp. i don't think that a parent should stay home necessarily but i don't think it should be a dishonorable choice. I do think maternity leave is very short and infant care is scarce - and expensive. Taking extended time off unpaid to care for your baby? Good luck getting back into the workforce. Two career dedicated parents = snow day catastrophe when kids are school aged, according to a recent thread. The poster was advised to have a long list of back up caretakers (herself and husband not included on list of course) and a few posters expressed relief that they didn't have to work with someone with child care issues. Babies in group daycares up to 10 hours a day? Perfectly common. Baby's need for one on one attention? Well that must not be true if both parents HAVE to work 10 hours a day. So what i saying is that our society does not seem to value children and family life. That is all.
