Here is what I don't understand about Mamdani's vision. I love his charisma, but when socialist leaders come into power, it is usually for an entire nation, not just one city. And they have the backing of the military to force the country to go along with socialism. Without that type of force, the educated and successful people in the private sector would leave. If Mamdani makes NYC socialist, but the rest of the country remains free, I don't understand why the 1% would choose to stay in NY to support free child care, free bus fare, etc. for everyone else. what is their incentive to stay?
If my taxes increase by 2%- his proposal for salaries over 1M - that is simply not that big of a deal. We’ve seen tax increases before and most UMC New Yorkers want to live in a thriving healthy city. And to put it more selfishly and practically, it’s better for everyone if people of different economics can afford to live here- we need workers of all types- not only bankers but teachers, firemen, police, sanitation workers, hair dressers, restaurant workers etc. This is not hard to figure out.
Thanks for taking a stab at serious discourse, up to your last sentence. But taxing 1% of the people an extra 2% will not make the city affordable for everyone on your list, not to mention the illegals who will continue to pour in, if the city is advertising itself as affordable for everyone and a sanctuary from immigration enforcement.
You obviously don’t live in NYC so I’m not sure why you’re bothering to post. But to address your points, no one is going to ‘advertise’ the city any more than it already has been. People come here bc it is vibrant and there is work, because they have family here, etc. New Yorkers are accustomed to immigrants. As far as being affordable with his fixes, no, I don’t think his proposals will magically make NYC affordable to everyone in the world. But if some tweaks make life a little better for the people already here, I’m fine with that. As one prior ex, universal pre K has been great. A win. Did I see people moving here in droves bc of it? No.
