Ok… was on spring break and just watched it. Wow. This episode was so sad. Watching the break down of a marriage was truly heartbreaking. I’m a little surprised by the anti-Kate sentiment here, on one hand she’s not blameless, but honestly I get the impression she’s just not in love with Toby anymore and that’s why the marriage ended. In the other hand, I feel Hailey is like this lost child in this all: Toby wasn’t connecting with Jack, let’s adopt another kid!!! Brilliant! Although it’s unsavory, I’m sure we all know people who’ve had kids, biologically or otherwise, whose relationships weren’t exactly stable. It’s very realistic. All of the big 3 are flawed human beings, I just hate how important it is for a woman to be “likable” to be related to. Did anyone notice that Chrissy Metz called Toby “Chris” at one point or was that just me? I disagree Kate and Phillip don’t have chemistry, although I would have liked to seen more of the build-up to that first date. Maybe that’s to come. Phillip’s story of his first wife was a kick in the stomach. Yes, if I were to meet them out I’d probably think they were a bit of an attractiveness mismatch, but we had the beauty (female) and the beast (male) b.s. shoved down our throats so long, I’m ok with this. I really hope we get the Kate/Sophie friendship reconnection story played out. So it’s gotta be Sophie, right? I’m a Cassidy fan but if she stays in the picture as a close friend and business colleague I’m cool with that. I just don’t particularly like the Sophie actress. In anything she’s done. Chris Sullivan blew me away in this episode. This episode was the payoff of a long-alluded to issue that Toby felt alienated in the Pearson family (remember that one episode where Beth, Toby and Miguel went to a bar and talked about how much they felt like outsiders sometimes?) and was very cognizant of the lingering effects of Jack on his wife. The writers laid the groundwork for this divorce almost as soon as they got together in season one.
This is the problem with the story IMO. I would have rather had her fall in love with Phillip first and leave Toby for him. If she didn't love him anymore, fine. But it seemed like she was doing everything she could to blame Toby for the breakdown of the marriage (you moved, you lost weight, you're a bad dad, which he wasn't). He was doing everything he could to save their marriage, including moving back to work a crap job for her so that she could work a job that paid nothing. And all she could do was nitpick. People don't like her because she's a whiny PITA who can't take responsibility for anything and she's always been that way. And of course she jumped right into another relationship--she has always needed a man to take care of her--Jack, then that awful boyfriend, then Randall, then Kevin, then Toby, now Phillip. She literally cannot stand on her own as a 43 year old woman. Despite the fact that if she could have just gotten her act together, Rebecca would have gladly done whatever she had to in order for Kate to succeed. And she treated Rebecca like crap for so many years. She's just a shit person. Her weight has nothing to do with it.
