[twitter]https://x.com/JoeNBC/status/1841414209092960534[/twitter]
Here's the thing. Vance's favorability going in was in the toilet due to Vance's own remarks and unlikeability. The only place had to go was up, and with Trump at 80 years old and out of shape, the stature of his VP frankly matters more than Harris who is young and vigorous and who can be President for 8 years before Walz has a shot. Vance may have to take over for Trump during the term. Vance acted like a whole different guy than he's been in interviews or in his interactions with normal people on the trail, or at MAGA rallies. And he was a smooth and silver tongued liar. He said ridiculous lies with a poker face and smile and it was only weird if you realized how outrageous his lies were. He really was saying "up is down" a few times. Tim Walz meanwhile was exactly the same as he is in person. But despite all of Vance's sweet talking, the majority of the debate was not memorable and a bit boring. Until the Jan 6th exchange when Vance tried to smooth talk away from answering Trump's loyalty litmus test: "Do you accept that Trump lost the 2020 election?" Vance wouldn't say the obvious answer: yes. Walz won the only exchange of the night that mattered. And unluckily for Vance, it was the note the debate ended on.
